âAnd if Onech isnât available?â questioned Cray.
âSome of the other judges are less open and unable to comprehend evidence provided in anything other than a traditional way,â admitted Orja.
âAnd what about Sutos?â questioned Lambrin. âSheâs not even within the caverns of Ledgrim legally. Even if she is exonerated of killing Thanrik Thun and a pair of his wives she will be exiled from the city.â
âOne of the advantages of being Chief of the High Council,â said Garvey, âis that I have the power to issue temporary writs of habitation for visitors or envoys from foreign tribes. I have done just such a thing and Sutos keeps the writ upon her person.â
âI foresee another problem.â Ntashia sat upright and pushed the plethora of braids back from her face. âWe have evidence Hitna Thun was involved in the plot, but we have no evidence that Thanrik Thun or the other two of his wives who Sutos killed were involved in the plot.â
âThanrik Thun was obviously involved,â rumbled Cray. âAfter all, it was he sent us to the outpost at Saturnok where Maron was killed.â
âIt looks suspicious,â said Ntashia, âand I have no doubt it was his intention for all of you to die there, but in his position on the War Council he sends people to die all the time and it is difficult to prove he had any malign intentions.â
Cray scowled. âI was telling Garvey the same earlier.â
âAs it stands,â continued Ntashia, âSutos has a good chance of being exonerated for killing Hitna Thun, but she might well be thrown into the lava pits for killing Thanrik Thun and the other two of his wivesâand then, once Sutos is convicted, Orja will be charged and then likely Garvey, though he knew nothing of it.â
Lambrin listened to this intently and though she was not native to the Muvari she had a keen mind for understanding the intricacies of the tribal laws of her adopted people. âYou donât need to prove his slain wives had anything to do with the assassination plot. Under the law of aegis all you have to do is prove Thanrik Thun was involved in the plotting, then the slaying of his agents, in this case his wives, will be justified under Muvari law.â
âBut just how do we do that?â asked Cray.
